That sounds like an amazing building block for a successful follow-up to Uncut Gems. ![]() To put this in perspective, take the first scene from Quentin Tarantino’s Inglorious Basterds, but Sandler’s dealer is the farmer, and the Simpson proxy is Christoph Waltz. What is supposed to be a mutually beneficial business transaction slowly escalates as Sandler’s character realizes he’s in danger before violence erupts. In this hypothetical film, picture Adam Sandler as the sports memorabilia dealer getting conned by a sports star that he’s a fan of as a stand-in for OJ Simpson. A dramatization of Simpson’s violent yet carefully planned assault would be a fitting follow-up thematically. Uncut Gems was his best performance to date, showing a jeweler in a downward spiral that continually gets into business with the wrong people, escalating horribly in every scene. Memes are like onions. We’re still not at the point where Sandler in a dramatic role isn’t a cause for celebration but a routine occurrence. So to sum that up, a sometimes ironic meme was combined with a sometimes funny joke and applied to a dark-humor based show, and because of how they all compliment each other, its product becomes unironically dramatic and artistic, even though it's acknowledged as ironic. The people who made Simpsonwave videos obviously wanted them to be ironically funny, since making a montage of scenarios from a show generally thought of as comedic and portraying the scenarios as artsy and dramatic using the already (situationally) ironic vaporwave theme sounds funny.īut because The Simpsons is already elementally dramatic – because almost all of its humor makes light of dramatic circumstances – removing the humor (by singling out and amplifying the dramatic parts) makes it genuinely dramatic, and along with that something vaporwave can be artistic (because of how much effort was put into making it look authentic), people unironically enjoy the videos as dramatic instead of funny, even while acknowledging that they're ironic in concept, regardless of what they were intended to be. In 48 hours, the video gathered more than 72,000 views. On May 26th, YouTuber This Exists uploaded a video titled "Is SIMPSONWAVE a joke?", detailing the history of the video series (shown below).
